Yesterday, Samuel Owori became the first confirmed president nominee of Rotary International to be of Ugandan blood.
Samuel Owori has been a member of Rotary International, a humanitarian service organization that brings together leaders under the common ground of creating positive impact around the world, for 38 years.
“Rotary has become a way of life for me – with the intrinsic value and core belief in mutual responsibility and concern for one another as a cornerstone” he said, “I feel immense satisfaction knowing that through Rotary, I’ve helped someone live better.” He added.
In close to three decades, Owori has shown dedication towards human development through the club, having opened from 9 to 89 clubs in the country. As he sets on planning his action in his period of office, Owori is looking towards eradicating the polio disease holistically as his top humanitarian goal. As the club has launched the polio immunization program PolioPlus in 1985, with a 99% eradication (from 350 000 cases a year to 26 in this year alone), it still remains a priority due to its paralyzing nature and the high potential to have it completely eradicated due to the international clubs extensive work, which through collaborating with international organisations such as Unicef, WHO and CDC brought these pleasing results.
Samuel Owori was not only selected based on his unwavering volunteerism in Rotary, but also what he does outside of the club that indirectly forges a positive impact to the international organization. Owori is the CEO of the Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda. He has previously served as the Executive Director of the African Development Bank, the Managing Director of Uganda Commercial Bank ltd and the Director of Uganda Development Bank. Academically, he has studied law, employment relations, business management, corporate resources management, microfinance, and marketing at institutions in England, Japan, Switzerland, Tanzania, and the United States, including Harvard Business School.
Samuel Owori will be 108th President of Rotary International and commences his term in the 1st of July 2018.
