Unfamiliar with the Pavement Bookworm? Just to put it in basic terms, Philani Literally read his way out of poverty into philanthropy. Just a few years ago, Philani was homeless, but kept a collection of books of which he later used as a form of earning income. He reviewed, sold and leased of his novels to earn a living alongside a busy road in Johanessburg, South Africa.
Through a viral video taken by Tebogo Malope Philani’s story spread globally, with the likes of Huffington Post covering his story. Today, Philani runs an organisation that donates books to children, playing his part in decreasing the illiteracy rate – developing a generation of informed bookworms in South Africa.
